Sense and sensibility. Seems both were suspended on November 8th. Small comfort that the 0.2% of the vote that separated Trump and Clinton favored Ms. Hillary. When the talking heads, at 10 p.m. or so, began their subtle shift in reporting from rationalization of the early DT lead to the growing awareness that \u2018this is really happening\u2019, I went to bed. You could almost smell the angst thru\u2019 the TV screen. I didn\u2019t need to stay up for the denouement. The gradual reddening of the map meant nothing, of course, in those hopeful early hours as the polls closed, one by one, state by state \u2014 and the map just continued to bleed. These were states that were historically and predictably Republican anyway \u2014 no need for alarm. The pollsters\u2019 predictions would be borne out. Florida was going to be close \u2014 but Miami-Dade would carry the day. Michigan, North Carolina, Wisconsin \u2014 even if the panhandle prevailed over the Latinos \u2014 would see the light and push the momentum back in the only reasonable direction. Not so.<\/p>\n

And so somebody won something. And a great many of us lost. In the aftermath, as the post hoc analysts, talking heads, and pundits tried to make some sense of how a campaign predicated on racism, misogyny, misinformation, confabulation, and hate could prevail, words like \u2018whitelash\u2019 began to surface. \u2018You can fool some of the people some of the time\u2019 has never rung more true than on November 9th \u2014 47.5% evidently. The Canadian Immigration website crashed around 11 p.m. as the disillusioned, fearful, and, as one friend distilled the impact, traumatized began to queue up.

\nThe question, one of many, that dominated \u2018the day after\u2019 was how this outcome was even possible. Sadly, there is no entrance exam or cut score for democracy. All are welcome. All are equally entitled. All can have their say. And if the message resonates, the content (evidently) doesn\u2019t matter. Catch phrases, red hats, and violent, abusive, angry rhetoric can (evidently) carry the day. \u2018What were they thinking\u2019, indeed has a simple answer \u2014 they weren\u2019t. A rudimentary understanding of what one is voting for and what the implication might be had precious little to do with how, in near 50% of the cases, one tick of a box would move a whole country one gigantic, retrograde step backward. Not to a kinder, gentler time. But to tribalism, us\u2019s and them\u2019s. The disenfranchised, that \u2018the Donald\u2019 would champion, have had their say \u2014 and it will be inscribed on a very different kind of commemorative wall.<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s late, on this Nov. 9th evening. And I have to ready the spare room for the next wave of refugees. The critical thinkers, the tolerant, the progressive, the inclusive \u2014 as the exodus begins. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
